Lemony Snicket, The Dark. Illustrated by Jon Klassen
Published by Orchard Books Australia in 2013, 32p. First published in 2013 in the United States by Little, Brown and Company
Lemony Snicket is the pen name of the American writer Daniel Handler best known for his A Series of Unfortunate Events. With The Dark he proves once more his ingenious artistic talent.
The little book speaks about one of the biggest universal fears – fear of the dark.
Laszlo, a boy in a lovely blue pyjama suit, is afraid of the dark.
The dark lives in Laszlo’s house, in the cupboard, at the shower and most of the time in the basement, expanding everywhere after sunset.
One night, the personified dark visits Laszlo and asks the boy to join him in the basement so the little child has to face his fear. They go together in the basement and brave Laszlo understands that darkness is part of his life. The dark offers him a drawer full of lightbulbs and never bothers him again.
You might be afraid of the dark, but the dark is not afraid of you. That’s why the dark is always close by… without the dark, everything would be light, and you would never know if you needed a lightbulb.
It is such a poetic and creative story and the illustrations are just perfect. I highly recommend it.
