Michael Rosen’s book is one of the best choices when reading to the very young

Michael Rosen, A Great Big Cuddle. Poems for the Very Young

Published 2015 by Candlewick Press, 80p

Oh, what a book!

Do you know that feeling when you find a book, you read it and you still wish you have discovered it sooner and read it again and again? This is the feeling I have with this book.  I didn’t know about it when I was in Romania so I read it to my daughter just when she turned five but we have enjoyed every poem and adored each illustration.

Michael Rosen, reading lesson

This volume is pure color and music, pure energy and joy. Some poems are short, maximum 25 words, but they are so profound and funny, so catchy. The first one, Tippy-Tappy sets the rhythm. And you cannot stop. Not until you finish reading the whole book. And your feet will still be tapping.

Not only babies and toddlers but also older children will love this book. The author plays games and most poems are silly, with non-sense but they are great entertainment and very complex and educational in content. Mangoes tango, fingers play, a hungry bear eats a bit of the moon, ducky is yukky and a slow train gets slower and slower. And as I said before, Chris Riddell’s illustrations are amazing and they capture the essence of the poems perfectly.

Michael Rosen, cuddle

There are books which lose their charm when translated and  A Great Big Cuddle might be one of them. Still it can be saved by the poems that speak universal language through sounds and music and by the delightful illustrations. I will definitely recommend it to my friends in Romania.
